National Heart Month 2026

Looking after your heart health

National Heart Month 2026 takes place every February and raises awareness of heart disease, cardiovascular health and the importance of prevention. Heart and circulatory conditions remain one of the leading causes of illness in the UK, but many cases can be prevented or managed with early detection, healthy lifestyle choices and regular health checks.

The British Heart Foundation plays a vital role in funding lifesaving research, providing trusted information and supporting people living with heart and circulatory conditions. Their work helps improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment, saving lives across the UK.

Why looking after heart matters:

Your heart plays a vital role in keeping your body healthy, as it pumps blood and oxygen around your body. Conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary heart disease and stroke can develop gradually and often show few symptoms in their early stages.

Having regular health checks and spotting any problems early can help lower the risk of serious heart issues and support your long term health.

Simple ways to support your health

During National Heart Month, it’s a great opportunity to review your daily habits and focus on positive changes:

  • Stay active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, such as walking, cycling or swimming.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Focus on plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, lean proteins and healthy fats, while reducing salt, sugar and saturated fat.
  • Stop smoking: Quitting smoking is one of the most effective ways to improve heart health at any age.
  • Manage stress: Take time to relax, prioritise sleep and explore stress-reducing activities such as mindfulness or gentle exercise.
  • Know your numbers: Regularly check your blood pressure, cholesterol and weight to stay informed about your heart health

Get involved this national heart month:

National Heart Month 2026 is the perfect time to focus on your heart health and support the wider community. By taking part in awareness campaigns like Wear It Red and supporting the British Heart Foundation, we can all play a part in raising awareness and helping fund lifesaving research.
