Mr Paul Kirkland

Consultant ENT Surgeon

MBBS, FRCS (Eng), FRCS (ORL-HNS)

General Medical Council Number: 3335534

I am a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) / Head and Neck surgeon working in Kent and East Sussex. I have been providing specialist ENT treatment for adults and children as a Consultant for over 20 years. Whilst I treat all general ENT conditions, I have specialised in the treatment of the sinuses, thyroid, parathyroid and skin lesions. My NHS practice is at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, working from the Conquest and Eastbourne Hospitals.

I qualified at St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London in 1989 and completed specialist ENT training in London and the South Thames region. I am on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register (GMC number 3335534). I undertook specialist training in Head and Neck surgery at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, and advanced training in thyroid and parathyroid surgery at the Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals, London. I was awarded a Fellowship by the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery and trained at two centres of excellence in Amsterdam and Stuttgart.

I was awarded Clinical Excellence Awards in 2008, 2011 and 2015 and received a National award in 2018 from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists for the introduction of the first One-Stop Swallow Disorder Clinic in the UK.

I am committed to providing the best possible care and outcomes for my patients. I achieve this by listening carefully to my patients’ concerns and involving them in the decision-making process regarding their treatment. I also work closely with Consultant colleagues, as a member of the Sussex Thyroid Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and the East Sussex Parathyroid MDT.

In my surgical practice, I offer minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques, to speed up the post-operative recovery and reduce the time spent in hospital. This includes Balloon Sinuplasty to treat sinusitis and minimally invasive Parathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism.

I have performed approximately 150 thyroid and parathyroid operations each year for the last 10 years, and as a result, I am one of the highest volume endocrine (thyroid/parathyroid) surgeons in the country.

I have been involved with clinical research in the areas of ENT and endocrine surgery and have published extensively in the medical literature. A list of my publications can be found on my website – www.theentclinic.co.uk

My consultation fee for self funding patients includes the consultant fee for all procedures performed in clinic, including ear microsuction, nasal cautery, nasal endoscopy and throat endoscopy. Hospital fees for procedures performed within consultation will still apply. I also offer hearing tests during the clinic consultation for those patients with significant hearing loss’
