What happens at the One-stop Gastroscopy Clinic?

The One-stop Gastroscopy Clinic offers a consultation, gastroscopy and *results – all in one visit.

The clinic may be suitable for you if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bleeding
  • Blood in your stools or black stools
  • Chronic (long-term) indigestion and/or heartburn
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Unexplained weight loss and/or vomiting

* Results may take longer if specimens are taken as these can sometimes take 2-3  weeks to come back. If this is the case, a follow up consultation will be booked for you to discuss your results when they are back.

The One-stop Gastroscopy Clinic is not suitable for people with severe and unstable cardiac and respiratory conditions, severe neurological impairment and in those with a history of problems with sedation. Any patients in these categories would need assessing in an outpatient clinic first of all as other investigations may be more suitable.

What is a Gastroscopy?

A gastroscopy is a type of endoscopy. This means it involves inserting a thin, flexible instrument, which has a tiny camera and a light at the end, into your digestive tract. It looks at your oesophagus (gullet), stomach and duodenum (the first part of your small intestine).  The gastroscope produces video images of the inside of your upper digestive tract. It’s sometimes called an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or a oesophagho-gastric-duodenoscopy (OGD).

A gastroscopy can help diagnose and monitor a range of conditions, including:

  • Anaemia (low blood iron levels)
  • Cancer
  • Digestive conditions such as Coeliac disease, Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD, Indigestion, Stomach ulcers
  • Helicobacter infection
  • Inflammation
  • Polyps — non-cancerous growths that can later become cancerous
