Sussex Premier Health, Hastings: Important update for patients with upcoming appointments
Knee replacement surgery is a critical procedure for those struggling with chronic knee pain or mobility issues caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis. At Sussex Premier Health, we have access to the latest Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA) technology. Whilst the procedure is broadly similar to traditional knee replacement surgery, it is performed, by your surgeon, with the help of a robotic assistant.
The ROSA® Knee System (Robotic Surgical Assistant) is a state‑of‑the‑art surgical tool developed by Zimmer Biomet to support your consultant during total knee replacement.
ROSA helps plan and guide your operation using a personalised 3D model of your knee based on X‑ray imaging—enabling sub‑millimetre accuracy in implant fit and alignment tailored specifically to your anatomy.
Throughout the procedure, ROSA tracks the real‑time position of your leg with optical sensors, offering continuous data to assist your surgeon—while you remain firmly in the hands of a fully trained expert, not a robot. Clinical studies show that this robotic support can reduce pain, shorten hospital stays and improve knee function and recovery outcomes.
If you are experiencing persistent knee pain or reduced mobility due to osteoarthritis or joint degeneration, the ROSA® Knee System may offer significant benefits. Ideal candidates typically have:
Moderate to severe osteoarthritis affecting daily life—such as pain when walking, swelling, stiffness or locking—and have tried more conservative treatments (like physiotherapy, injections or pain relief medication) without sufficient improvement.
Previously treated knee deformities or trauma (e.g., healed fractures or misaligned bones), where precise implant alignment is especially important—a scenario for which ROSA offers clear advantages.
Good general health—so that surgical risks are minimised—and realistic treatment goals, including improved mobility and quality of life. Age and activity level are also considered when assessing suitability.
While ROSA can technically be offered to anyone eligible for a total knee replacement, your consultant will carefully evaluate whether it’s the best option for your individual anatomy, health status, lifestyle and financial circumstances—especially since robot-assisted surgery may take a little longer and involve additional planning steps.

The ROSA® Knee System (Robotic Surgical Assistant) supports your consultant in performing a personalised total knee replacement with enhanced precision.
Before surgery, we use a series of low-radiation X-rays to build a 3D model of your unique knee anatomy. This enables your surgeon to plan detailed aspects of the procedure—such as implant size, bone cuts and alignment—tailored to your leg structure.
During surgery, optical trackers and a high-resolution camera continuously monitor the position of your knee, acting like an advanced GPS that detects even slight movements. This real‑time feedback allows your surgeon to make sub-millimetre adjustments, ensuring the implant is placed exactly as planned. Importantly, ROSA itself does not operate autonomously—your consultant remains fully in control throughout the operation.
Early clinical experience has shown that this data‑driven approach may lead to reduced post‑operative pain, better knee function, and a faster recovery.
To ensure optimal outcomes, only orthopaedic surgeons who have undergone comprehensive training are authorised to operate the ROSA system.
Every patient’s needs are unique, and selecting the most suitable surgical approach is crucial. During your initial consultation, your consultant will thoroughly assess your medical history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and overall health to determine whether the ROSA® Knee System is the right choice for you.
This personalised evaluation ensures that the recommended treatment aligns with your specific requirements, aiming to achieve the best possible outcome.
You will need to contact your insurer provider to check you are covered for this procedure and your insurer will provide you with an authorisation code.
