Robotic hernia repair uses the Da Vinci® Surgical System, a state-of-the-art robotic platform designed to assist your consultant during minimally invasive surgery. The system features tiny surgical instruments mounted on robotic arms and controlled by your surgeon from a nearby console.

This provides a magnified 3D view of the surgical area and allows for highly precise movements that replicate — and enhance — the natural motion of the human hand.

Importantly, you remain in the hands of your consultant throughout — the robot never operates independently. The technology simply enhances your surgeon’s vision, precision, and control.

Robotic hernia repair is suitable for most common hernias, including inguinal (groin), umbilical, incisional and hiatal hernias.

Both are minimally invasive, but robotic surgery offers greater precision and a 3D high-definition view. The robot’s flexible instruments move more like a human wrist, allowing finer control and better access in complex cases.

Yes. The da Vinci® System is widely used worldwide and supported by extensive clinical research. Your consultant will discuss all risks and benefits before you decide on surgery.

Most patients return home the same day or after one night in hospital. Many resume light activities within a few days, but full recovery typically takes two to four weeks, depending on the type of hernia and your overall health.

Most major UK health insurers cover robotic hernia repair; however, you will need to check with your insurance provider to see if you are covered.
