Mr Mackie studied medicine at University College London and entered service with the Royal Navy. After a period of general medical duties he specialised in urology, undertaking a MSc in Urology as well as an MD in Biomedical Sciences.
With an interest in research, Mr Mackie completed theses on chemotherapy agents for urological cancers. During specialist training, he undertook a two year fellowship in minimal access surgery and renal stone disease in Edinburgh and Sydney, following which he was appointed as Consultant Urological Surgeon to the Defence Medical Services in Portsmouth.
In 2015, Mr Mackie retired from full time military service to take up an NHS post in East Sussex and have developed a general urological service with a sub-specialist interest in minimal access surgery for renal stone disease.
