What are Arthrosamid® Injections?

The treatment involves an ultrasound-guided injection directly into the affected joint. This injection is made from non-biodegradable hydrogel, which cushions the joint and provides pain relief. Patients often experience a reduction in pain levels within just four weeks, leading to improved mobility and quality of life.

This treatment is particularly beneficial for individuals who have not found sufficient relief from other therapies, such as medications or physiotherapy. Arthrosamid® offers a minimally invasive alternative, making it an appealing option for those seeking pain relief without the risks and recovery time associated with surgery.

At Sussex Premier Health, our dedicated team of healthcare professionals is committed to providing exceptional care to our patients.

Benefits of Arthrosamid® Injections

  • One treatment, performed as an outpatient under local anaesthesia
  • Longer lasting relief from pain compared to other injectables for knee pain

Why choose Arthrosamid® Injections?

There are several reasons why you might consider having an Arthrosamid® injection:

  • Painkillers and lifestyle changes have not alleviated your knee pain.
  • Knee replacement surgery may not be suitable for you, whether due to age or an existing medical condition that prevents surgery.
  • You may prefer to avoid knee replacement, especially if your job involves frequent kneeling, for example.

Your Consultant will review your medical history and assess your level of pain. They may also arrange an X-ray to determine the severity of your osteoarthritis and will discuss your treatment options during your appointment.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the cartilage, which cushions the ends of the bones, breaks down over time. This leads to pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced movement in the affected joints. It most commonly affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine.

As the cartilage wears away, the bones may begin to rub against each other, causing further discomfort and damage. Osteoarthritis can develop gradually and is often associated with ageing, although other factors such as joint injury, genetics, obesity, and overuse of the joints can increase the risk. Symptoms may vary in severity, but they typically include pain during or after movement, stiffness after rest, and difficulty in performing everyday tasks.

While there is no cure for osteoarthritis, treatments such as pain management, physical therapy, and sometimes surgery, can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Your consultant will assess your suitability for Arthrosamid® treatment during your initial consultation and discuss any reasons why you may not be eligible for the procedure. These may include:

  • An infection at or near the injection site
  • Having haemophilia or taking anticoagulants
  • Suffering from an autoimmune condition, such as Multiple Sclerosis, Addison’s disease, or Coeliac disease
  • Having had a knee arthroscopy within the past six months
  • The presence of a foreign body in your knee
  • Being pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Poorly controlled diabetes
  • Planning to undergo major dental work

The cost of an Arthrosamid® injection is £2,471.

This does not include any consultations or diagnostics prior to the procedure or follow up consultations.
