What is Laser eye treatment (YAG laser capsulotomy)

What is YAG Laser Eye Treatment?

YAG Laser eye treatment is a non-invasive laser procedure most commonly used to treat posterior capsule opacification (PCO) — a condition that can cause blurred or cloudy vision months or years after cataract surgery.

During the procedure, a specialist uses a YAG laser to create a small opening in the cloudy capsule behind the lens implant, allowing light to pass through clearly again. The laser is precisely targeted and does not damage surrounding eye structures.

The procedure offers:

  • Rapid restoration of clear vision

  • No surgical cuts or stitches

  • No need for general anaesthetic

  • Minimal recovery time

  • A high success rate

Most patients can resume normal activities shortly after treatment.

Would I be suitable for YAG Laser eye treatment?

You may be suitable for YAG Laser treatment if you experience:

  • Blurred or cloudy vision after cataract surgery

  • Glare or halos around lights

  • Reduced contrast or difficulty reading

  • Vision that feels similar to cataracts returning

Ideal candidates typically:

  • Have been diagnosed with posterior capsule opacification

  • Have previously undergone cataract surgery

  • Are in good general eye health

Your consultant ophthalmologist will carry out a full eye assessment to confirm whether YAG Laser eye treatment is appropriate for you.

No. YAG Laser eye treatment is not painful. Most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure. Numbing eye drops are used beforehand to keep you comfortable.

The laser treatment itself usually takes only a few minutes. Including preparation time, your appointment typically lasts around 30 minutes.

Many patients notice an improvement in their vision almost immediately, although it can take a few days for vision to fully stabilise.

Yes. YAG Laser eye treatment is a well-established and widely used procedure with an excellent safety record. Your consultant will discuss any potential risks during your consultation.

Most patients can return to normal daily activities the same day or the following day. You may be advised not to drive immediately after the procedure, so arranging transport home is recommended.

In most cases, YAG Laser treatment only needs to be performed once per eye. Posterior capsule opacification rarely returns after treatment.

Some patients may notice mild floaters or slightly blurred vision for a short time after treatment. These usually settle within a few days.

If both eyes require treatment, this will be assessed by your consultant. In some cases, both eyes may be treated on the same day or at separate appointments.

A follow-up may be arranged to check your eye pressure and ensure your eye is healing well, depending on your individual circumstances.
