Sussex Premier Health, Hastings: Important update for patients with upcoming appointments
If your child is experiencing symptoms such as persistent rashes, eczema flare-ups, hay fever, unexplained allergic reactions, wheezing or suspected food allergies, skin prick allergy testing can help identify potential triggers quickly and safely.
At Sussex Premier Health, our private paediatric skin prick allergy clinic for children at Eastbourne, East Sussex, provides rapid access to specialist allergy assessment in a calm, child-friendly environment.
At Sussex Premier Health we use skin prick allergy testing which is a simple and widely used method for identifying allergies in children. During the test, small amounts of suspected allergens are placed on the skin—usually on the forearm or back—and the skin is gently pricked to allow exposure to the allergen.
If your child is allergic to a substance, a small raised bump or redness may appear within minutes. The test is carefully monitored by a trained clinician and is considered safe for children when performed in an appropriate clinical setting.
Skin prick testing may help identify reactions to:
The results are interpreted alongside your child’s symptoms and clinical history to help guide diagnosis and ongoing management.
Your child may benefit from skin prick allergy testing if they experience:
Not all symptoms are caused by allergies, so your clinician will discuss whether testing is appropriate based on your child’s history and symptoms.
Appointments last approximately one hour and are designed to provide a comprehensive allergy assessment for your child.
If your child is taking antihistamines, they will need to stop these 1 week prior to the appointment.
Your child’s appointment will begin with a thorough consultation with Dr Oana Anton, including a detailed discussion about symptoms, medical history, diet, family history and any suspected allergic reactions.
A specialist nurse will then carry out skin prick allergy testing using a selection of allergens tailored to your child’s symptoms and clinical history. The test itself usually takes only a few minutes, with results developing within approximately 15–20 minutes.
During the same appointment, Dr Anton will review and explain the results with you and provide a personalised treatment and management plan. Where appropriate, this may also include paediatric dietetic advice for suspected or confirmed food allergies.
You will receive guidance on:
Our team is here to help provide fast access to expert allergy assessment and personalised care for children across East Sussex and surrounding areas.
Skin prick allergy testing is considered very safe when performed by trained healthcare professionals. The amount of allergen used is extremely small, and serious reactions are rare.
Some children may experience mild itching or redness at the test site, which usually settles quickly. Your clinician will explain the procedure fully and answer any questions before testing begins.
Testing may include common food allergens such as milk, egg and nuts, as well as environmental allergens including pollen, dust mites and animal dander. The allergens tested will depend on your child’s symptoms and clinical history.
Appointments last approximately one hour and include a detailed consultation, skin prick allergy testing with a specialist nurse, review of results and a personalised treatment plan.
Your child will need to stop taking antihistamines 1 week prior to the appointment. Our team will provide further guidance on this when booking the appointment.
