What are the benefits of robotic hernia surgery?

  • Exceptional Precision: The da Vinci® System translates your surgeon’s hand movements into incredibly precise actions, enabling delicate tissue handling and optimal mesh placement.
  • Minimally Invasive Approach: Smaller incisions mean reduced post-operative pain, less scarring, and a lower risk of infection compared with traditional open surgery.
  • Faster Recovery: Because the procedure causes less tissue trauma, many patients return to normal activities more quickly.
  • Improved Outcomes: Enhanced 3D visualisation and sub-millimetre control help ensure the hernia is repaired securely, potentially reducing the chance of recurrence.

What is robotic hernia surgery?

If you’re living with the discomfort of a hernia, you don’t have to let it limit your lifestyle. At Sussex Premier Health, our experienced consultant surgeons perform robotic-assisted hernia repair using the da Vinci® Surgical System, the latest in advanced technologies available for minimally invasive surgery.

This approach allows your surgeon to operate with exceptional accuracy through tiny incisions, helping to reduce pain, speed up recovery, and minimise scarring.

Robotic hernia repair uses the Da Vinci® Surgical System, a state-of-the-art robotic platform designed to assist your consultant during minimally invasive surgery. The system features tiny surgical instruments mounted on robotic arms and controlled by your surgeon from a nearby console.

This provides a magnified 3D view of the surgical area and allows for highly precise movements that replicate — and enhance — the natural motion of the human hand.

Importantly, you remain in the hands of your consultant throughout — the robot never operates independently. The technology simply enhances your surgeon’s vision, precision, and control.

Robotic hernia repair is suitable for most common hernias, including inguinal (groin), umbilical, incisional and hiatal hernias.

Would I be suitable for robotic hernia surgery?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have a symptomatic hernia causing pain, discomfort, or a visible bulge.
  • Want a less invasive repair with smaller scars and quicker recovery.
  • Have had a previous hernia repair and would benefit from greater precision.
  • Are in good general health and able to undergo general anaesthetic.

Your consultant will discuss your medical history, lifestyle and preferences to determine whether robotic, laparoscopic or open repair is best suited to your needs.

It’s an advanced robotic platform that assists your surgeon in performing minimally invasive surgery. The Da Vinci® System doesn’t make decisions or perform surgery on its own, your consultant remains in full control at all times.

Both are minimally invasive, but robotic surgery offers greater precision and a 3D high-definition view. The robot’s flexible instruments move more like a human wrist, allowing finer control and better access in complex cases.

Yes. The da Vinci® System is widely used worldwide and supported by extensive clinical research. Your consultant will discuss all risks and benefits before you decide on surgery.

Most patients return home the same day or after one night in hospital. Many resume light activities within a few days, but full recovery typically takes two to four weeks, depending on the type of hernia and your overall health.

Most major UK health insurers cover robotic hernia repair; however, you will need to check with your insurance provider to see if you are covered.

Our self-pay options are also clearly priced with no hidden charges.
